Prior to this programme, I haven’t had any chance to interact with children with ASD. My knowledge about autism was also limited to the impression that they are boisterous and have low self-regulation. This programme made me realize that it’s hard to differentiate autistic children from mainstream ones as their attentional deficiencies only show in learning tasks, otherwise; they behave very much like normally functioning children. I am grateful for this opportunity to experience first-hand how teaching interventions are used to correct autistic behavior. Moving forward, this experience has developed my interest in possibly becoming a behavioral therapist in the future as it combines my love for kids and teaching into one job.

Being part of AP for a mere 5 weeks saw me with more takeaways than any other work experience can give. From the friendly staff to the kids with the brightest of smiles, this experience touches me full and whole with sharp intensity. I find myself brimming with so much greatness to hold in my frames and senses. The raw interaction with the children leaves me part moved and part aching, learning patience, genuineness and other virtues along the way. I am thoroughly humbled by all that I’ve learnt and all that I’ve yet to. Thank you AP, I’d choose to do this all over again in a heartbeat.

I never had much interaction with children because I am the youngest in my family therefore when I started the training programme at Autism Partnership I was quite worried because I didn’t know what to expect and I had no schema as to how to interact with children. Initially I was extremely awkward interacting with the children however at the end of the programme, despite still not being equipped with the expertise, I learnt the importance of consistency, praise and patience in teaching children. I am definitely less awkward now with children. Thank you AP for the experience!
